Tobacco

Be Smoke Free

Tobacco use is responsible for approximately 1/3 of all cancers. It is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Ontario! Non-smokers who are exposed to second hand smoke have an increased risk of cancer and other lung diseases.

If you are a smoker, it is never too late to quit. If you don’t smoke – don’t start and avoid second hand smoke.
Cancer Facts and Targets

Smoking rates in 2005 for North Eastern Ontario show that 28.8% of adults are current smokers (30.1% of men and 27.5% of women). The same year shows 28.7 % of male Ontario teens and 24.7% of female Ontario teens are current smokers.

The Cancer 2020 goal is to have 95% of adults and 98% of teens smoke free by the year 2020 and less than 1% will be exposed to second hand smoke.

Trend: The number of men and women in North Eastern Ontario who are current smokers is decreasing. The number of Ontario teens smoking is also decreasing.

What You Can Do

If you smoke the best thing you can do for your health is to quit! Quitting at any age will reduce your risks, but the benefits of quitting increase the younger you are. So don’t put off quitting – set a date and write it down.

Set a good example – teens who smoke are more likely to have parents who smoke.

Get support to help you quit – quitting isn’t easy, but it can be done! Talk to your doctor about medications that can help.

Be supportive of someone who is trying to quit – your support will make their job a little easier.
Protect your family’s health – if you don’t smoke, don’t start. Keep your home and car smoke-free.
